It’s budget time in local authorities in Scotland – and despite the squeeze on Council finances being created by the SNP, Lib Dems have scored some major wins across the country.
Here are some of the highlights:
- The Lib Dem group in Fife managed to secure an extra half-million pounds for more Educational Psychologists after prolonged campaigning by Cllr Aude Boubaker-Calder and the Lib Dem team – helping to alleviate issues around mental health and the rise of violence in schools. Alongside this, the team in Fife managed to secure an extra £3.5 million for road repairs and over £1 million for flood mitigation.
- In Edinburgh, our Council group promised to stop the cuts to schools in the city – they not only managed to stop the cuts, they managed to secure an extra £2 million for schools. An amazing example of Lib Dem councillors prioritising schools and demanding better. This is on top of £300,000 for supported bus services and another £300,000 towards Edinburgh’s Million Tree City project.
- In Aberdeen, the Lib Dem group secured more money for road repairs and abolished the ‘Garden Tax’ charge for garden waste collections.
Liberal Democrats are still managing to deliver, even in the face of the SNP’s Council funding squeeze – and these are just the highlights.
