Following the local elections, the new political balance at the LGA has been released. Although the Conservatives remain the largest party (and therefore retain the position of LGA Chair), no party has majority control of the LGA, and we remain very much a cross-party organisation. The Liberal Democrat Group has increased its share slightly.
Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Councillor Howard Sykes, said: “Thank you to everyone who campaigned in the recent set of local elections, congratulations to the winners and commiserations to those who didn’t win this time round. We lost some great councillors and I want to put on record my personal thanks for all their hard work over the years, they will be sadly missed.
“It is fantastic to see such an excellent set of results from all regions of the country, gaining outright control of four councils and 75 additional councillors. We look forward to working with our newly elected councils and councillors and making good use of these results to push for Liberal Democrat values within the LGA.”
- Conservatives 43.4% (-0.4)
- Labour 38.8% (+0.6)
- Liberal Democrats 9.7% (+0.3)
- Independent Group 8.1% (-0.6)
