Cross-party Local Government Association (LGA) research, reveals that nearly half a million pupils are in academies that have been assessed by Ofsted as either inadequate or requiring improvement since conversion.
Commenting on the report, Education spokesperson John Pugh said:
“These findings back up our long held concerns that the Government’s obsession with turning every school into an academy will do nothing to drive up standards – not to mention completely undermining councils’ ability to deliver the education provision their communities need.
“We strongly oppose this forced academisation, as well as the threat of bringing back Grammars. The Government must immediately stop their misguided tinkering with the way we run schools which will fail pupils and further demoralise teachers. If they are as serious about improving attainment, then they should instead be giving our schools the investment they need”.
