There were by-election victories for Liberal Democrats in principal and town councils in this week’s round of local by-elections. In Cumbria (CC), the local Lib Dems held a seat in Kendal, Strickland and Fell division with 59.9% of the vote. Peter Thornton won the contest with a majority of 760, whilst the party’s vote share increased by 7.8% from two years ago. In the same area, Liberal Democrat Jon Owen comfortably held a Lib Dem seat on Kendal Town Council, winning in Strickland ward with 62.1% of the vote.
In Somerset, the party also found success in gaining a seat on Street Parish Council. In a double vacancy, Lib Dem Peter Goater topped the poll to win a seat alongside a Street Independent.
Elsewhere, the Conservatives held a seat on Windsor & Maidenhead Borough Council in Maidenhead Riverside ward with 53.4%. Liberal Democrat Saghir Ahmed came in second place with 23.2%, a 7.7% vote share increase for the party since last may.
Three principal council by-elections will be taking place next week. Liberal Democrat candidates will be standing in contests in North Kesteven (DC), Broadland (DC) and Redcar & Cleveland (UA), with the Conservatives defending all three seats.
