Tackling gambling addiction
The LGA has been working with two authorities and Geofutures, the company commissioned to undertake the work, to develop a series of spatial maps they had developed highlighting local areas at risk of gambling related harm. These were developed following an extensive literature and data review intended to identify different groups at higher risk of gambling related harm, followed by a process to identify data that can be used to accurately represent these groups in a local / mapping context.
The result looks to be a tool that will be of real value to councils (and industry) in developing targeted, localised approaches to gambling regulation, in line with the objectives of the Gambling Commission. The LGA will be working with local authorities to see how this could be used by other local authorities.
