LGA LIB DEMS WELCOME PLAN TO SAVE HUNDREDS OF LIVES EVERY YEAR
In response to The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations coming into force on 1 October, Cllr Jeremy Hilton, LGA Lib Dem Fire Services Spokesman and Chair of the LGA’s Fire Services Management Committee, said:
“It was good that Lib Dem ministers in the previous government pushed for these regulations. Put simply, the legal requirement that comes into force tomorrow for private sector landlords to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their properties will save hundreds of lives every year.
“At the LGA we have been campaigning vigorously for this regulation on behalf of fire authorities, safe in the knowledge the vast majority of reputable private sector landlords will have already voluntarily installed alarms.
“For the small minority of landlords who have been putting the lives of their tenants at risk, it will mark the end of their reckless behaviour. To put it in context, a 10-year sealed alarm costs around £15 – a small price to pay for any business.”
