Five principal council elections were held yesterday, all of which resulted in holds. In Haringey (LB), Liberal Democrat candidates Demi Adebiyi and Jenni Hollis both finished second behind Labour in the contests in Noel Park and Woddside wards. The party’s vote share from the last elections in Haringey in 2014 increased in both wards (by 0.8% and 9.2% respectively), although this was not enough to secure any gains from Labour, who held both seats with 758 and 836 vote majorities.
In Richmondshire (DC), the Conservatives narrowly managed to hold onto their seats in Richmondshire East, withstanding a challenge from the Richmondshire Independents to triumph by just 19 votes. Phillip Knowles finished in third place for the Liberal Democrats, polling 17.6%, an increase of 3.1% from this may. The Tories also held their seat in Bourn ward in South Cambridgeshire (DC) by a much more convincing margin of 332, with the Lib Dems increasing their vote share by 13.5% from four months ago in finishing second.
The Conservatives managed to top the poll on first preference votes in Ayr East ward in South Ayrshire (UA), although the SNP went on to held the seat on the final stage. No Lib Dem candidate was fielded in this by-election.
Liberal Democrat candidates will be fielded in all five of the principal council by-elections next Thursday. The Conservatives will be defending seats in Wyre Forest (DC), Derbyshire (CC), Norfolk (CC) and South Norfolk (DC), with Labour hoping for a hold in Pontefract North ward in Wakefield (MB).
