There were five principal local council by-elections held on Thursday 24th November. We gained a seat off the Tories but lost one to Labour. Mebyon Kernow gained one seat from Independents and there were two Labour holds. There was one parish or town council by-election result reported to ALDC, an Independent hold. Hazelmere South, is part of a large, largely 70’s overspill estate around Hazelmere village that effectively merges into the wider Wycombe conurbation, in Buckinghamshire. Over the year despite being briefly held by both Labour and the Liberal Democrats the area has been solidly Conservative. In 2007 the Tories elected two councillors unopposed and in 2011 we came third with a paperless campaign. Both Tories elected in May blotted their copy books. One had a homophobic rant on his blog and the other it is suggested fled to the Midlands when dubious material was found on his council computer and resigned to cause the by-election.
Enter our candidate embedded in his community and regarded by many as “Mr Hazelmere”. We front loaded our campaign targeting postal voters with three letters prior to the issue of postal votes including and endorsement letter from a local resident. Only our candidate and the UKIP candidate lived in the ward. UKIP rallied behind their candidate including a visit by Nigel Farage but it was too late. Our candidate did not just raise local issues he had a track record of tackling them.
The Lakenham division of Norfolk County Council actually lies in Norwich, and in the Norwich South constituency. In a held parliamentary seat we naturally fought a strong campaign. The boundary is coterminous with the three councillor city council ward where our by-election candidate is one of the three councillors. In May labour held one of their two seats in the Ward by a larger margin so we knew it was going to be a tough fight. In the end we held off the Green challenge and pulled some ground back from Labour’s result in May.
