Recommended reading for Lib Dem Councillors and local campaigners over the last seven days:
Three major political stories continued to dominate the national media:
The violence at the NUS demonstration in London is reported by the Independent here as Student Riot Marks End of Coalition’s Era of Consensus.
Meanwhile the Guardian wonders if the Phil Woolas Affair is about the Soul of the Labour Party.
The main Government announcment of the last week has been on Welfare Policy. Here are two Lib Dem views: Nick Clegg in the Guardian, Poverty plus a pound is not enough, and Steve Webb on Lib Dem Voice on Why Liberal Democrats should welcome the welfare reforms.
In the Municipal Journal (online as localgov.co.uk) two stories caught our eye, one good and one bad for local Government:
Councils’ Role in Education Funding Under Threat Councils to set planning fees
Congratulations to Tim Farron MP on his election as Party President! Here’s the announcement on video! On the subject of internal elections, I don’t normally recall the Guardian reporting on these, nowadays too good an opportunity for them to spin…
Finally, on the subject of the Guardian, unlike much of what they say about us nowadays, an interesting story about the AV referendum in Labour and Liberal Democrats Grassroots Alliance.
